Queer is the Hollywood adaptation, by the Italian Luca Guadagnino, of William S. Burroughs' Queer : autobiographical manuscript from 1952 (direct sequel to his first book Junky, a story with a heroine), published by its author only in 1985. It tells the story of the meeting, in a disembodied Mexico, of his alter ego Lee (played by the ex-Bond Daniel Craig : an idea) with Eugene Allerton (transposed from a certain Lewis Marker, played by Drew Starkey), a younger boy, more or less straight, whom he desires without much in return, and their journey to South America in search of yage, another name for ayahuasca , to which the story attributes telepathic powers.
Abandoning oneself to the film while forgetting the book? It will be difficult. The queerness of Queer the novel was entirely clinical and negative, a song – in the form of a report – of insect, amoeba, self-disgust. But we know that Guadagnino only knows how to do one thing well, he glamorizes, sexualizes, it is his operation. He seeks seduction and wants the result.
